Acupuncture Basics

Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years, even in the veterinary world!  There are books in ancient China documenting protocols for animal acupuncture. Acupuncture is the insertion of sterile needles in specific points along channels of the body.  These channels, or meridians, are associated with internal organs and run along the outside of the body. The Qi, or Life Force, flows along these channels to help keep the body in balance.

When there is pain, inflammation, or other pathological issues, it is thought that the Qi is stagnant, interrupted, and not able to flow appropriately.  Acupuncture helps to release these blockages and interruptions in Qi, and therefore restores balance and helps the body heal itself.

Sessions last anywhere from 10-30 minutes, depending on the animal’s condition, temperament, and attention span. Many veterinarians recommend weekly treatment for 3-6 sessions in order to see a difference and get ahead of the issues we’re working on, then sessions are spread out according to the pets needs.

For our pets, we can help decrease pain, inflammation, release endorphins, and push through the stagnation to help keep their body balanced!  The goal is to increase their quality of life by making them feel better without the side effects of western medications.
